Weigh-In Week #1: Goin’ Down

Even though I felt I had a semi-bad weekend on the food and exercise front, I still was able to lose weight.  I was able to lose 3.1 lbs. over the week, so obviously I’m very happy about that!  I attribute this to increased exercise, both at lunchtime and in the evening.  I only walk for around 10-15 minutes at lunch; the evening walks usually last 30-40 minutes.  I’m not really moving at a fast pace right now…I’m just happy to be more active.  Plus, having walking buddies has been a tremendous help.  Together, we’ve walked over 5 miles!

The week ahead is a little intimidating.  I’m not so worried about the work week.  It’s the weekend, of course, due to multiple parties, which means lots of snacks, finger foods, entrées, and desserts.  Tempting for a fat guy like me, to say the least.  I’m going to have to keep my hunger in check, stay busy, track what I eat and drink, and be sure that I continue to exercise.

For now, I’m happy with the weight loss for the week.  I’ll worry about the weekend when I get there.

NOTE:  I attended an Overeaters Anonymous meeting this weekend.  Overall, it was a very positive experience.  But in the interest of anonymity, I’m not going to provide any details on this blog.  If you would like to hear about my first OA meeting, please send me an e-mail.

  1. 3.1! Wooooo hooooo! Nice work! Good that you have walkers to keep you moving, too. Always good to have support. I used this idea when I was dealing with cranky parents at Parent Teacher Conference and I was trying to remember how I wanted to ‘deal’ with them: wear a rubber band on your wrist (doesnt look so weird on a teacher, I know) as a visual reminder not to snack/not to graze/whatever is your goal at these weekend parties. Or wear the Livestrong Bracelet (others think it’s for cancer, sure, but it means more to you). Or tell people: “Dude, help me out here. Can we stand 10 feet away from the table and talk about the Sox pitchers?” Agan. THREE POINT ONE! WOOO HOOOO!

    • Thank you very much!! I’m happy. :-) Great idea regarding the rubber band…I have never thought to do that. I need constant reminders throughout the day…this would be perfect!

    • Thank you Jack!! I appreciate the support – I definitely need it! I have been reading your blog as well. I was having trouble commenting there, so I’ll just respond here. Your post from yesterday (August 1) is an awesome post. Extremely motivating for me to read this. Keep on posting, and keep up the great work!!

  2. Awesome! So great and so inspiring! I’m going to restart my one hundred push up challenge when I get back from Old Orchard next week. Last time I did everything on paper, have you tried the iphone app? Love, a cyber copy-cat

    • Thank you Cyber Copy-Cat!! And good luck with your push up challenge! It’s definitely challenging for a weakling like me. I forgot about the iPhone app…I will go download that now. Have fun in Old Orchard!

  3. Awesome, Scott! Congrats on the weight-loss so far. I had a bit of tough weekend with my family in town. I recommended we go to one of my favorite restaurants in the area, and we did. I had a salad  instead of fried chicken, yeast rolls, BUTTER, and corn. Kinda sucked, and I ended up binging in the aftermath, but I did ok on the binge. I ate two small sandwiches with deli meats and mayo (neither on my diet), and I got a cheesy hot dog and a regular coke. Could have been a lot worse, because I wanted to go to maggianos and get the biggest bowl of fettuccini alfredo they had, as well as slathering every piece of bread with butter. I was right back on track yesterday and today, though. The weekends can be killer, and I guess the best thing I’ve found is that I need to plan everything out really well and have things I enjoy on-hand. Sometimes everyone wants to go out to dinner, and it would just be easier for me if I don’t go with them in a hungry state! So I’ve been eating a protein bar right before we go out to dinner to kind of fill me up and help suppress my cravings.

I’m really enjoying following your progress!! Keep it up!

    • Thank you for the support!! Yes I know…weekends are very tough for me to eat well, so I’m trying to take it one day at a time. If I have a bad day, then the next day is a new day and I get back on track with the weight loss plan. I think you did pretty damn well this past weekend with your family in town! It could have been so much worse – I’m glad you are focusing on the positive there. Great advice on filling up on healthy stuff before going out.

      Thanks again!

      • Yeah, that’s one of the most helpful things that I’ve learned. If I eat stuff that is on my plan before going out, I’m less like to be OMG HUNGRY and want to indulge and can just enjoy socializing rather than feeling like I’m punishing myself the whole time.

  4. Hey Scott!
I have trouble with finger foods at parties too. I recently started eating a big healthy meal shortly before leaving for a party so that I’m not starving when I get there. It’s so hard to keep track of what you’re eating when it’s a little bit here and there. Now I go to a party and have a small plate, but I’m not really hungry so I don’t keep going and going. I also try to go to the grocery store full so I don’t go crazy :) Good Luck!!

    • Thank you for the support Meghan! Great advice on eating before going out. I never used to do that until a few weeks ago, and it has gone a long way. And yes, going to the grocery store full is tremendously important…you wouldn’t believe how many times I have bought way too much food because I’m starving!
